The Cornell Note-Taking System

A systematic format for condensing and organizing notes. Divide the paper into three sections: Cues, Notes, and Summary.

1. Record

During lecture, use the main notes column to record the lecture using telegraphic sentences.

2. Questions

As soon after as possible, formulate questions based on the notes in the cue column.

3. Recite

Cover the notes column and try to answer the questions in the cue column.

4. Reflect

Reflect on the material by asking yourself questions like: "What's the significance?"

💡 Pro Tip: Use the Left column (Cues) for keywords and questions. Use the Right column (Notes) for main ideas. Summarize everything at the bottom.

The Outline Method
