The Western Province U16A water polo team opened their campaign at the 2024 Schools Water Polo South Africa Inter-Provincial Tournament in spectacular style, demonstrating both skill and teamwork.
The tournament commenced in Buffalo City on December 8, 2024, and will continue until December 11. With high expectations following last year's narrow loss to KwaZulu-Natal in the finals, the team quickly reasserted itself. Matthew Fenn shone brightly, leading the tournament with nine goals after two matches, followed closely by teammate Benjamin Bigara, who netted seven.
The Western Province's formidable offensive line showcased its strength, illustrated by their first match where they confidently defeated Central Gauteng B 13-4. Several players made substantial contributions, including Timothy Young and James Malan, each scoring twice alongside other team members.
In their subsequent match against the home side, Buffalo City, Western Province displayed even more dominance, trouncing them 17-2. Fenn scored six goals, while Bigara found the net four times, signalling their intent to claim the title as they topped Pool A convincingly.
Meanwhile, province competitors, including Nelson Mandela Bay and Zimbabwe, have also shown strong performances in the tournament, setting up an exciting race for supremacy.
